Teaching Qualification: Gymnasium
Gymnasium teaching degree: Two teaching subjects are combined. In addition, the course of study is supplemented by the study of educational science. This results in the following combination of subjects:

A stay abroad is recommended and can be integrated well into the course of study. High compatibility with the B.A. programs in English Linguistics, British Studies, and American Studies provides the opportunity for a double degree in Teaching Qualification/B.A. with many major and minor subject combinations.
The study program for Teacher Training English comprises the areas of language practice, linguistics, literary and cultural studies (both British and American studies) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Linguistics deals with the understanding of the structures and developments of the English language. Literature and cultural studies critically examine the literatures and cultures of the United Kingdom, Ireland, North America, and other English-speaking countries.
The basic qualifications acquired in the core modules are expanded and consolidated in the intermediate and advanced modules. The TEFL module pays specific attention to skills and knowledge of lesson design and didactics. The Teaching Qualification for Gymnasium includes an advanced module where students can acquire more in-depth knowledge of a selected subject area (choice between British Studies, American Studies and English Linguistics).
All teacher training programs include classes in educational science.
Teaching English at secondary school (Gymnasium)
In accordance with the examination regulations for teaching I (LPO I), §§ 34, 36 and 38, the following teaching practices are to be completed:
English Linguistics, British Studies, American Studies, Didactics of English
The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 9 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.
270 ECTS credits overall;
comprising 92 ECTS credits for each teaching subject, 10 ECTS credits in each subject didactics, 35 ECTS credits in education, 10 ECTS credits in the thesis, 15 ECTS credits in the elective area, 6 ECTS credits teaching practice.

Prerequisite is the general university entrance qualification, the subject-related university entrance qualification or a professional qualification.

The following language skills must be demonstrated at the latest when registering for the state examination:
Knowledge of Latin or knowledge at level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in a Romance foreign language.
This knowledge can also be acquired during the course of study. Corresponding courses are offered through the Study Accompanying Foreign Language Education (SFA).
