Master of Arts: Only a single subject is usually studied. However, individual programs can be highly interdisciplinary. This means that the contents of the program may come from different fields of study.

Description

British Studies at the University of Regensburg covers the entire range of the literatures and cultures of the United Kingdom, Ireland and the English-speaking world (with the exception of North America) from the Middle Ages to the immediate present. It deals with textual as well as visual, material, performative and virtual representations and interpretations of the cultures it researches, and within this, above all with the methods of literary and cultural studies, linguistics, media studies and gender studies. In the context of both the history of the British Empire and globalisation, postcolonial texts and theoretical approaches as well as intercultural issues are of particular importance.

The aim of British Studies teaching and research is a historically informed, culturally differentiated and academically reflected understanding of the United Kingdom, Ireland and the English-speaking world. The main areas of focus of British Studies at the University of Regensburg currently include:

  • literature and culture of the United Kingdom in the 19th and 20th centuries
  • contemporary British culture and media
  • gender studies
  • early modern studies
  • science and literature studies
  • postcolonial studies.

Internships, lab courses, practical courses

The Master's degree program contains an internship module consisting of 13 ECTS credits.

No other departments are involved in the Master's program in British Literary and Cultural Studies (British Studies).


Program duration / standard period of study

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 4 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.

Language skills needed

To get admitted to this Master's degree program, applicants need to provide a proof of English language proficiency corresponding to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

By the end of the first year of study, applicants who did not obtain their first degree or higher education entrance qualification at a German-speaking institution must provide proof of basic German language skills corresponding to level A1 CEFR.
