Program structure

Bachelor of Science: Only a single subject is usually studied. Individual programs may be provided with a small minor subject (module).


Special features

Students are trained to become scientists at the interface between biology and medicine. Stays abroad are desirable, especially in the 5th semester. The training does not qualify students to practice medicine.


Description

Modern biomedical research needs young scientists who are familiar with the latest methods and techniques in biology and biochemistry and at the same time have a broad medical knowledge. The aim of the Bachelor's program in Molecular Medicine is to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to investigate the complex molecular causes of human diseases. With a better understanding of these causes, new methods can be developed to accurately diagnose and treat the diseases.

Acquire skills in state-of-the-art techniques and theoretical knowledge in molecular and cell biology, physics, chemistry, biomathematics and statistics, biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, immunology, microbiology, human genetics, epidemiology, and pharmacology.

Career prospects for Bachelor graduates in "Molecular Medicine" include:

  • Clinics (molecular and biochemical diagnostics under supervision).
  • Industry (research and quality control in the field of life sciences and the research-based pharmaceutical industry under supervision)
  • University institutes of theoretical medicine (research activity under supervision in the fields of physiology, anatomy, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology/virology, human genetics, epidemiology)
  • Diagnostic laboratories, clinical chemistry (activities without management function)

Qualification goals of the bachelor's program are knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • basic science subjects (e.g. biomathematics/statistics, physics, chemistry, biology)
  • preclinical basic science subjects (e.g. anatomy, cell biology, biochemistry, physiology)
  • clinical basic science subjects (e.g. immunology, pharmacology, pathology, microbiology, human genetics)
  • intensive laboratory practicals and the certificate of proficiency in animal experimentation science.

Program duration / standard period of study

The duration of the study program depends on the individual course of study. The standard period of study, i.e. the time in which the intended study program can ideally be completed, is 6 semesters. The actual duration of study may deviate from this. It is limited by the examination deadlines, which are regulated in the examination regulations.

Language of instruction

German; seminars partly in English. Please note that sufficient knowledge of German (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH) with an overall result of at least DSH-2 or an equivalent language certificate is required.)

The study program "Molecular Medicine" offers scientifically talented and motivated high school graduates a modern, attractive and intensive education that combines strengths from medicine and basic biological research.
