Program structure

In the first study phase (semesters 1-3), students take foundational courses in economics, business administration, and quantitative foundations; and, in addition, students take courses in a language of Central or Eastern Europe.

Alongside the obligatory specialization "International Economics", the second study phase (semesters 4-6) consists primarily of the specialization "Central and Eastern Europe", containing courses which are regionally oriented and come from one of the following three disciplines: History and Cultural Studies, Political Science, Law.

Semesters abroad during the second study phase are recommended.
With appropriate qualifications, honors study is possible.

Description

Economics is the science of examining and solving economic problems systematically and on a sound methodological basis. While business administration focuses on the individual company, economics is about understanding the interaction of individuals and companies, explaining macroeconomic processes and analyzing the scope for economic policy action.

International Economics (IVWL) is especially directed at students who are specifically interested in the economic relations of Germany with the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. In addition to economic competence, language skills in Central or Eastern European languages will also be taught. The regionally specific perspective beyond economics into either history and cultural studies or political science or law also prepare students for a truly international work assignment.

Professional prospects / competencies

With an analytically well-grounded education as an economist, students are qualified for entering many economic professions in the private and public sectors. Economists work for companies, associations, economic research institutes, ministries and public authorities, universities, in economic journalism or in international organizations.

The focus of the study program "International Economics (IVWL)" is especially directed towards job opportunities related to Central and Eastern European countries.

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 6 semesters. What qualities do I need to have?

Interest in economic issues. Openness for mathematics (which is used for theoretical and empirical analyses). Willingness to (further) learn a Central or Eastern European language. Interest in the economy, politics and culture of Central and Eastern Europe.
