Special features

The Institute of Classical Archaeology at the university of Regensburg is part of the newly founded "Netzwerk Klassische Arch?ologie" (Network of Classical Archaeology), encompassing the archaeological institutes of the universities of Bochum, Bonn, Freiburg, G?ttingen, Heidelberg, Leipzig, Rostock, and Tübingen. The joint initiative of this network is sponsored by the Stiftung Mercator and the Volkswagen Foundation. The so-called PONS-Brücke stimulates and facilitates student exchanges among partnering institutes and supports this temporary change of study location financially and logistically. Furthermore, in the framework of the Bavarian Elite-network (Elite-Netzwerk Bayern), the Institute of Classical Archaeology of Regensburg cooperates with the elite/master study course "Aisthesis. Historische Kunst- und Literaturdiskurse", being reflected in the courses of study of the institute; http://www.kunst-bilddiskurse.de.

The focus on visual culture is deepened by the cooperation with the research association "Sehen und Verstehen" (Seeing and Understanding) of the University of Regensburg.

Description

Classical Archaeology sees itself as a historically and art-historically oriented, interdisciplinary cultural science. It deals with the material legacy of all areas of life of Greek and Roman antiquity, from the 2nd millennium BC to late antiquity. It also includes numerous marginal and neighboring cultures, insofar as they had a cultural relationship with ancient Greece or Rome. The subject of the discipline encompasses thus the roots of European (or Oriental) art and culture and the critical transmission of their cultural memory, which have been repeatedly invoked and reinterpreted at various times in the European Occident (but also in the Islamic Orient).

The balanced combination of a decidedly pictorial research approach and a research focus oriented towards archaeological excavation contexts and topographical issues, as well as the inclusion of Etruscology, which is otherwise rarely cultivated at German universities, give Classical Archaeology in Regensburg its special profile compared to other archaeological university institutes.

Professional prospects / competencies

Upon completion of the bachelor's program, students should be able to independently apply the diverse methods and working techniques of classical archaeology on a secure knowledge base. The spectrum of skills ranges from pictorial analysis and methods of interpretation in cultural history to the critical recording of findings (e.g. of excavation situations). Practical skills include knowledge of the most important scientific languages (in addition to German: English, Italian, French and possibly Modern Greek), as well as practical experience in the field of excavation.

Professional perspectives in the closer field of classical archaeology are, after completion of the consecutive master's program as well as the structured doctoral program, a university career, a job in museums, in research institutes (e.g. German Archaeological Institute), in the preservation of historical monuments or in the excavation business (e.g. excavation company). Outside the boundaries of the discipline, the acquired competence in cultural-historical issues and working techniques can also be used profitably in many fields, e.g. journalism, publishing, cultural management, etc.

Internships, lab courses, practical courses

Practical experience can be gained from, amongst other things, working on excavations in the Mediterranean region, which can be carried out using third-party funds from the institute's teaching staff. In addition, internships (at excavations or museums) and language courses (modern and ancient languages) can be taken, which can be recognized and awarded credits in a subsequent master's degree program. Thanks to the cooperation of the Institute of Classical Archeology with Building Archaeology at the OTH Regensburg, you also have the opportunity to take practical courses (surveying, drawn or digital) which can also be recognized and awarded credits in a subsequent master's degree program.

Disciplines involved

As part of an interdisciplinary module (KLA-M04), courses in ancient history, classical philology, art history, and prehistory and early history are integrated into the program.
