Program structure

Only a single subject is usually studied. However, individual programs can be highly interdisciplinary. This means that the contents of the program may come from different fields of study.


Special features

The master's program in chemistry in Regensburg impresses with its large freedom of choice. True to the motto "my master's suits me", students have the opportunity to set individual focuses through free choice of modules and to align their master's program according to their own preferences. Description

The general master's program in chemistry has three basic modules that can be freely combined from all offered sub-disciplines of chemistry. Courses from the neighboring scientific disciplines of biology and physics can also be included and thus individual thematic emphases can be set.
The basic modules each conclude with an oral final module examination. Two sub-disciplines are deepened by two advanced modules I, one of them by a further advanced module II, in which special knowledge and working techniques are taught. The final module includes an excursion as well as a research methods course to prepare for the master's thesis. The scientific master's thesis, which is accompanied by seminars, takes nine months. It can also be done abroad. The overall grade of the master's degree is composed of the three graded final oral module examinations and the grade of the master's thesis.


Professional prospects / competencies

The job description of a chemist is very versatile. Many chemists start their career in the chemical industry after completing their Ph.D. Here, there are opportunities in research, product development, production, analytics, environmental protection, marketing, patenting, public relations, etc. Federal and state authorities as well as municipal offices also employ chemists. In this case, they are mainly employed in the areas of monitoring, environmental protection, licensing and supply. Hospitals also hire chemists and biochemists. In addition, some chemists with a Ph.D. also pursue an academic career at university. This involves learning working techniques in new research areas during a Postdoc position (one to two years, usually abroad). Subsequently, one starts one's own research and builds up a working group. Those who want to work in research, but not necessarily at the university, will find opportunities in a rich landscape of national and international research institutes (e.g. Max Planck Institutes, Fraunhofer Institutes, etc.), where the special expertise of chemists is always in demand for very different focal points.

In preparation for professional activities, subject-specific key qualifications and job-relevant competencies are to be imparted. The study program is designed in such a way that, in addition to the acquisition of scientific working methods and the integrated overall view of the subject of chemistry, interdisciplinary skills such as self-organization (especially during the master's thesis), preparation of presentations and seminar lectures, evaluation of primary literature in English and interdisciplinary thinking are also acquired, which are relevant for later professional life.

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 4 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.

What qualities do I need to have?

As with all natural sciences, interest in the working of the world around us, enthusiasm for experimentation, and a certain level of understanding of mathematics are important for success in your studies. In addition, you should have good language skills in English as the scientific language.

  • Existing knowledge from your bachelor's degree in chemistry
  • Ability to solve complex and difficult problems
  • Interest in application problems

Restricted admittance

No, this program does not have restricted admission. Please note, however, that you have to take part in an eligibility test.


Legal requirements for admission

In order to enroll in the master's program in chemistry, you must participate in a so-called aptitude test, which means that you must first apply to the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy. Further information can be found on the homepages of the Chair.

Qualification:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemistry or comparable, at least 180 credits?(equivalent in content and method to the bachelor's degree in chemistry at the University of Regensburg)
  • Average grade of at least "good" (2.5).

Application deadline(s)

Applications for admission to the master's program and the aptitude test must be submitted for the summer semester in the period from September 1 to December 1 and for the winter semester in the period from March 1 to June 1.
