Program structure

Master of Arts: Only a single subject is usually studied. However, individual programs can be highly interdisciplinary. This means that the contents of the program may come from different fields of study.


Special features

The program is offered as part of the Elite Network of Bavaria in cooperation with the LMU Munich. Students beginning in the same year complete the research methods course, the project course and the summer school together at both universities.


Description

Eastern European Studies is a two-year, interdisciplinary master's program with courses in three subject areas 1) History and Social Anthropology; 2) Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; and 3) Law, Business and Economics. All students complete a course in research methods, a two-semester project course, a summer school in Eastern Europe, an internship, and intensive language training.


Professional prospects / competencies

The program provides students with the interdisciplinary regional and linguistic skills to work in a wide variety of careers with an Eastern European focus, including media, cultural organizations and NGOs, government and the private sector. Many students go on to complete a doctoral degree and work in research and higher education.

Program duration / standard period of study

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 4 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.

What qualities do I need to have?

All students must have a demonstrable interest in and experience with East, East-Central and/or South-Eastern Europe, and an intellectual openness to cooperate in interdisciplinary teams.


Restricted admittance

The master's program does not have restricted admittance; however, you will need to pass an eligibility test in order to enroll in the program.


Legal requirements for admission

In order to be able to enroll in the master's program "Eastern European Studies", you have to participate in an aptitude test.

Requirements:

  • ??? First professional university degree with the grade "very good" - at least with the grade "good" (for lawyers at least with "fully satisfactory")
  • ??? Basic knowledge of at least one Eastern European national language

Registration dates and deadlines

After a successful application (aptitude test) for the master's program "Eastern European Studies" you can enroll. Information about the dates for enrollment and the required documents can be found on the homepage of the Registrar's Office.


Language skills needed

Applicants need to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of German and English, as well as at least basic knowledge of an Eastern European language.

  • Copy of undergraduate university degree (or transcript of records that show at least 150 credit points have been completed),
  • curriculum vitae,
  • proof of Eastern European language competence,
  • evidence of any extracurricular activities related to Eastern Europe,
  • essay of 800 words on a topic announced on the program's website,
  • proof of English at the level B2 GER.
