Program structure

Mittelschule teaching degree: A teaching subject is combined with a combination of three didactics subjects and the subject elementary school pedagogy and didactics. In addition, the course of study is supplemented by the study of educational science.

Description

Studying to be an art teacher at the following schools: Grundschule, Mittelschule, Realschule

  • Skills and abilities in artistic design in the areas of graphics, painting, 3-dimensional design and design with new media, as well as skills in a technical area of work
  • Skills in constructive functional work
  • Basic skills in scenic design
  • Skills in critical analysis and constructive reflection of own artistic works
  • Skills in the presentation of artistic works
  • Basic knowledge of perception and creativity
  • Knowledge of art historical focal points and contexts from antiquity to the present day
  • Ability to analyze and interpret works of visual art and aesthetic phenomena in a broader sense; insight into their contexts of origin and effect
  • in-depth knowledge of the goals, content and methods of the subject of art
  • in-depth knowledge of the planning, implementation and evaluation of art lessons at the appropriate age and developmental level, including the evaluation of student work
  • skills and abilities in explanatory drawing

Admission to the 2nd state examination for a teaching profession at secondary schools in the subject of art

In accordance with the examination regulations for teaching I (LPO I), §§ 34, 36 and 38, the following teaching practices are to be completed:

Program duration / standard period of study

The length of the program depends on the progress of an individual's studies. The standard period of study, the time in which the intended program can be finished ideally is 7 semesters. The actual time taken to complete the program may vary. It is limited by the examination deadlines set out in the examination regulations.


Program scope

210 ECTS credits overall;
comprising 54 ECTS credits in the teaching subject, 12 ECTS credits in subject didactics, 70 ECTS credits in the didactics of a subject group in school type mittelschule, 35 ECTS credits in education, 10 ECTS credits in the thesis, 15 ECTS credits in the elective area, 6 ECTS credits teaching practice, and a further 8 ECTS credits in education.

Restricted admittance

No, this program does not have restricted admission based on grades. Please note, however, that you have to take part in an eligibility test.


Legal requirements for admission

Admission to the program is by an aptitude test, which is structured as follows:

  • Preselection: In the pre-selection, the applicant's visual skills and professional aptitude are assessed on the basis of the portfolio submitted (See: Required Application Documents).
  • The visual-practical examination lasts at least four hours and consists of a piece of work to be completed in a written examination, the topic of which is provided by the examination committee.
  • The oral examination lasts 15 minutes and is conducted as an individual examination. The examination is intended to determine the ability to make reflective statements about one's own and other people's pictorial solutions, knowledge of the goals of the subject and knowledge of art history.

Documents needed (to apply / register)

  1. Proof of the acquisition of the university entrance qualification.
  2. Submission of at least 25 own visual works (portfolio). Drawings and paintings are to be submitted as originals; photographs of three-dimensional works with size information are to be enclosed in non-digital form. The form of presentation is optional for the applicants. A statement that the works were produced independently must be submitted with the submission. The portfolio must be labeled with the name and address (notification address). All works are to be marked with the name. The place of submission is the secretariat of the Institute of Fine Arts and Aesthetic Education.
