Subjects Offered at UR

The Bachelor's degree is the first academic degree with which a scientific study program can be completed after usually six semesters (= 3 years). In addition, it is a first professional qualification. A distinction is made between the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) and the Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.). With the B.Sc., only one subject is studied.

With the B.A., either one major subject and two minor subjects or two majors are studied.

The master's program is an advanced course of study usually lasting four semesters. The prerequisite for admission to a master's program is the completion of a bachelor's degree or an equivalent first professional degree.

The following master's degrees are offered at UR:

• Master of Arts (M.A.)
• Master of Science (M.Sc.)
• Magister Legum (LLM)
• Magister Theologiae (M.T.)

For the state examination, the state or a federal state acts as the examiner. The standard period of study is between eight and twelve semesters, depending on the subject.

At the university, the training is completed with the first state examination.

With this degree one finishes:

• medical degree programs,
• pharmacy,
• law and
• the teacher training programs.

These double degree programs are special cooperations where students complete study periods at different partner institutions and receive degree certificates from all participating institutions. These programs are international programs but not necessarily programs taught in English. Therefore, applicants interested in these study programs need to fulfill the German language requirement, which means that they have to know German on level B2/C1 in order to be accepted.

The goal of doctoral studies is to obtain a doctoral degree. Doctoral studies are usually based on individual research work in close cooperation with an academic supervisor.

The core of the doctorate is the dissertation ("doctoral thesis"). After the dissertation has been accepted, a disputation, i.e. an oral examination, takes place.

A doctoral program usually takes three to four years.
