My interests include a variety of subjects, such as

• quantum field theory, in particular lattice QCD
• random matrix theory
• mathematical physics
• high-performance computing
• supercomputer design and development

I'm the principal investigator of a project in the framework of the SFB/TRR-55 in which we develop custom-designed supercomputers and high-performance software for Lattice QCD and similar applications. So far the project has delivered the following supercomputers:

• QPACE:
  - co-design with IBM and several other companies and academic institutions
  - PowerXCell 8i processors and FPGA-based network
  - most energy-efficient supercomputer in the world in 2009/2010 (No. 1 on Green 500 list)
• iDataCool
  - co-design with IBM
  - Intel Xeon processors and InfiniBand network
  - hot-water cooling with temperatures up to 70°C
• QPACE 2:
  - co-design with Intel and Eurotech
  - Intel Xeon Phi (KNC) processors and network based on PCIe and InfiniBand
  - No. 15 on Green 500 list in 2015
• QPACE 3:
  -co-design with Intel and Fujitsu
  - Intel Xeon Phi (KNL) processors and OmniPath network
  - No. 5 on Green 500 list in 2016

We are currently developing QPACE 4 in collaboration with Cray.
