01 | Research Interests
Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Information Retrieval (IR)
My main research interests are in natural language processing, information retrieval and the implementation of such techniques in real applications. The intelligent directory enquiry assistant (YPA) project is a very early example where the extraction of information from partially structured data together with engineering issues played major roles in making the YPA a usable online system.
Dialogue Systems, Gamification, privacy and ethical issues in IR are further research topics I investigate.
Bringing Industry and Academia Together
I have furthermore been involved in successful joint university/industry projects that turned NLP and IR research into practical commercial applications, for example as PI on a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project with Signal Media. The collaboration won the Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership Project of the Year Award at InnovateUK's 'Best of the Best 2015' event, and another KTP project with Signal Media has just started. I have a keen interest in bringing industry and academia closer together and have (co-)organised a variety of events such as Industry Days at top IR conferences, e.g. the ECIR 2019 Industry Day, and I am part of the organising team of the Search Solutions event held annually at the British Computer Society's London HQ.
In Regensburg I established the Data Science @ Regensburg Meetup which regularly features speakers from industry and academia, both local and international presenters. Come and join us!

02.1 | Current Projects
COURAGECOURAGE is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation and aims at a virtual companion that guides teenagers in the use of social networks. The virtual companion will increase awareness of the potential threats to which young people are exposed in social networks.
SIGNAL CollaborationA highly successful Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project (2013-2015) was the starting point for an ongoing collaboration with Signal Media. As the University Lead PI I am pleased that Miguel Martinez-Alvarez who joined us as KTP Associate is now Head of Research at Signal. Currently, I act as a senior academic adviser. Here is a timeline of some exciting news in our collaboration: November 2014: Miguel is named a Business Leader of Tomorrow (here is a short video portrait of Miguel ... and more coverage of the event / main actors here). April 2015: Best demo award at ECIR 2015 for Signal demo, and even more exciting: Signal has just announced that it has raised $1.8m growth capital from top tier investors (see Techcrunch). November 2015: Signal project wins Best KTP Partnership Award 2015. February 2016: Project features on InnovateUK's home page again. Another landmark: Signal closes a $16m Series B funding round. December 2018: new KTP project confirmed, to start in January 2019.
DALIThe project "Creating anaphorically annotated resources through semantic wikis (AnaWiki) (EPSRC)" has led to the development of Phrase Detectives, an annotation game aimed at the creation of semantically annotated corpora. The DALI ERC project builds on the findings and lessons learned in PhraseDetectives. |
02.2 | Recent Projects
HRBDTA five-year ESRC Large Grant on Human Rights in the Era of Big Data is now well underway. The Language and Computation Group at the University of Essex plays a significant role in this project which also builds on our links with the Minority Rights Group.
KTP MRGA three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project (2014-2017) involving the Minority Rights Group and Essex aimed at new systems to support civilian-led monitoring of human-rights violations. The Iraq Ceasefire Portal is one of the major outcomes of the project. The Corpus of Violence Acts in Arabic Social Media is an academic resource, described in more detail in our LREC 2016 paper.

CV
Udo Kruschwitz is the Chair of Information Science at the University of Regensburg as of July 2019. Prior to that he was a professor in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex.
His main research interest is the interface between information retrieval (IR) and natural language processing (NLP). He has led research projects developing algorithms to turn unstructured and partially structured textual data into structured knowledge and user/cohort models that have been applied in a variety of applications including search, navigation and summarisation.
